“Don’t help from your wound - help from your gift,” said my mentor.

“AND YOUR GIFT IS… SALES”

Not that long before, I'd been hiding in the back of a camping store in Melbourne, folding tradie clothes and praying no one would ask me about which hiking boots to buy ‘cos I'd never camped in my life and was terrified someone might actually want to buy something from me.

Sales was the last thing I thought I'd be good at. I’d graduated from a Bachelor of Commerce at The University of Melbourne still unsure what my path would be. Then coaching found me. I went to a 2.5 day event and saw the coach transform people in the audience. Something in me said “I want to be able to do that!”

I fell in love with the work so completely that I spent the money I'd been saving for my first car on coach training instead.

Off I went to coaching school. I loved it. But I couldn’t fathom asking for the $120 hourly rate our instructor said we should charge so I started at $20. Here’s how it worked out. I had one client. I paid $10 for a 60-minute train ride into the city where I spent 90 minutes with that client, who paid me $20.

One day I did the math. I was making $4 an hour.

I loved helping people transform their lives. But when it came time to tell someone my fee, I froze.

I realised if I wanted to keep doing the work I loved, I had to make peace with sales.

So I immersed myself in it. Hired the mentors, took courses, got an actual sales job working for a business coach on strict instructions from my coach that if I didn’t learn to sell, I wasn’t going to make it in my industry. I learned that sales can be sacred and transformational.

At one point though, listening to the “mentor” meant giving up my sovereignty. I was starting to see patterns of power trips and posturing. A big chunk was discerning who had integrity and who I could trust from the programmes that just gave me the “ick”.

I was that Sri Lankan girl who felt like she couldn't tell an authority figure, “actually I don’t believe that would work for me..” even though the advice would be contrary to how my body would feel about a strategy. I was learning how to discern what truth felt like in my body. I noticed that the coaching industry worked by someone finding a strategy that worked for them and that person teaching that strategy to others. Since we’re all so unique, I could see so many people struggle, trying to implement things their “minds” told them was a good idea. So obsessed about following the “formula” that they stopped paying attention to what was real, what was going on closer to the ground.

Learning to trust myself to make decisions and follow through was my next big lesson. I quit my sales job (it had started to become a crutch) and that year made $58,000/= in my own business where I created deep containers for the work I did both 1:1 and in small groups. It was also the year I gave birth to my first child.

My training as an intuitive added to my sensitivity.

I realised that I hadn’t just learned about sales, I had honed the skill of paying attention.

Learning to notice what was coming alive in people.

The ideas they'd quietly dismissed. The patterns asking to be seen.

The work they were being invited towards long before they had the confidence to claim it.

The places where life was inviting them into a new chapter long before they had words for it.

That's still the work I do today.

A few things worth knowing

I've been coaching since 2008

Long before launches, funnels and personal brands became the norm, I was helping people listen for what was emerging and find ways to bring it into the world.

I've helped people build businesses that fit who they
are,
not just what they do

Clients have gone on to create new arms of their businesses, launch programmes they've sat on for years, raise their prices with integrity, sell their first $5,000 to $20,000 packages, and generate significant income from work that feels more aligned with who they are.

I care deeply about impact beyond business

Outside of private coaching, I also spend time designing and contributing to community initiatives around relationships and marriage. Much of my work begins with listening—paying attention to what people are challenged with, noticing the needs that haven't quite been named and transforming those ideas into programmes, resources and experiences that serve the community.

When I'm not working, you'll usually find me with my husband and our three boys, embracing the gentle chaos of family life. The soundtrack of my happiest days is the quiet hum of a home where everyone is immersed in something they love—my boys creating, building and playing, while I’m sharing the space with them. It reminds me that the feeling of abundance in life often arrives by grace, not by striving.
